Recess Reminder

With the cold weather and snow upon us, it is important that your child is properly attired for recess.  We send the students out each day unless there is harsh weather or unsafe conditions.  If you are unsure, please have your child prepared. . . just in case we do go out.

This includes hat, gloves, boots, snow pants and warm jacket.  Everything should be labeled with your child's name.

If your child does not have boots and snow pants, s/he will need to stay on the hard top and will not be able to play in the snow.

Also, your child needs to bring a change of shoes to put on after recess.  Sometimes children wear hiking boots or work boots as snow boots -  this is fine as long as they have a dry pair of shoes/sneakers to put on when they come in from recess.  It is not a bad idea to throw an extra pair of socks into your child's backpack!

Please take a minute to review with your child how to get ready for snow play.  Teaching your child the order in which to get dressed (i.e. snow pants, boots, jacket-zipped, hat gloves) would be greatly appreciated as we are often trying to help 20 kids at the same time and this is a good thing four your child to learn to do independently.

It may be a good idea to have a separate, good sized, labeled, water proof bag for your child to carry his/her snow gear in.

Thank you very much.

I hope you all enjoyed some quality time with your families during these past two snow days.

Read at Home Books
A couple of parents have asked me about the RAH books that went home this past Monday.  My plan is to sign books out every Monday so please have your child return his/her book on Fridays.  Please remember if you think the book is too easy for your child . . . It is appropriate for children to read books at an easy, or independent (without support) level to build fluency, sight word recognition and confidence in their ability to read.  Instruction in more challenging books will come for working in the classroom during guided reading time.

Patriot’s Spirit Day
This Friday will be Patriot’s Spirit Day.  Have your child wear Patriot’s gear or red, white, and blue to support the Patriots as they take on the Seahawks during the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Special Person of the Week
We have started Special Person of the Week.  When your child is selected to be Special Person they will be given a magazine to fill out over the weekend.  Names are pulled randomly for a hat, so please let me know if there is a particular weekend that would not be good for your child to work on his or her special magazine.  Jimmy, Nicholas and Seamus have done a wonderful job sharing their magazines with the class.

Valentine’s Day
On Friday, February 13th we will be having our Valentine’s Day party.  Please have your child make out a valentine for every child in the class.  There are 20 children in the class.  In light of the many allergy and food related concerns that exist at Memorial School, we are requesting that NO FOOD be sent in with Valentine cards.  Thank you very much for your cooperation.  Below is a class list.

Medfield High School Student

Starting next week, we will be having a student from Medfield High School assisting in our classroom a few days a week.  Kyra Kramer, who is a senior, will be attending Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania in the fall and will be majoring in Early Elementary Education.  We are very excited to have her.  I know she is looking forward to working with the children.

Donations
If you would be interested in making a donation to the class, we are currently in need of glue sticks, hand sanitizer and paper towels.  Any donation would be greatly appreciated.

As always, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me at pgrace@email.medfield.net if you have any questions or concerns.

I can't believe that it is already the middle of January.  The year is flying by and the children have shown so much growth since the month of September. Since we have come back from our holiday vacation we have started a new program called Writing Workshop.  The children are learning that we are all writers. They now know that writers start with something to say and then do everything they can to put that meaning onto the page.  Here are some pictures of busy writers in our class.

This past Thursday Johnny the K came to Memorial School.  He educated and inspired the children through his spirited and interactive style of music.  His collection of costumed hats, masks, and disguises were very entertaining. Johnny's message is always about treating each other with respect and kindness.  The children loved him!
